Craig Benish relies heavily on his home caregivers around the clock.

Craig suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He needs a wheelchair and can move the chair with his fingers, but needs help to get out of the chair and go to bed. He uses a device that helps him breathe for hours. Those with DMD typically have difficulty breathing due to weakness in the diaphragm and the muscles that surround the lungs. Craig needs help drinking high protein shakes to keep his weight off. He drinks part of the shakes every 15 minutes.

His family rearranged their lives to make sure Craig can be looked after at home and say this is the best place for him. Her Susquehanna Township home has an elevator to lower his chair from the porch to the sidewalk. His room, filled with medical equipment, is off the kitchen so he can be part of family life. His sister Hillary Rothrock now works full time as a carer and the family depends on a few other helpers.

Finding home care workers is never easy for families of seniors or people with disabilities, but the COVID-19 pandemic has made it even more difficult, said Carolyn Benish, Craig’s mother. Since housekeeping is not usually well paid, they regularly have to find new helpers to take care of Craig.

“We lost some very, very good helpers,” said Carolyn Benish.

US Senator Bob Casey Jr. supports laws that he believes would create more domestic help jobs and increase their pay. Casey, D-Pa., Pushes a bill (“The law on better care, better jobs”) as part of President Joe Biden’s stimulus package.

Casey visited Craig and his family in Susquehanna Ward on Monday.

“I could never do the kind of work they do every day,” Casey said.

U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr., D-Pa., Walks outside Craig’s home in Susquehanna Ward with Craig Benish and his home nurse, Ieisha Brown. Casey urges legislation to increase pay for home care workers.

It is a demanding job, usually with a very low salary.

The average wage for home care workers is around $ 12 an hour, according to Casey’s office. Many fast food restaurants and convenience stores even offer new employees more money. Housekeeping often does not receive any benefits or vacation days.

The legislation would create 19,000 new home nursing jobs in Pennsylvania and about 500,000 nationwide, Casey’s office said. It would help 120,000 more seniors and people with disabilities in Pennsylvania receive care in their own homes, the senator said.

Better pay could help contain the industry’s high revenue, which is 40 to 60%, notes Casey.

Casey is sponsoring the move with U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., And Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. The bill would provide more Medicaid funding to states for home and community services.

He said he hopes lawmakers can win support for the measure this fall. Casey said it was imperative to have support for carers and families who rely on them to care for their loved ones.

“Care can’t wait,” said Casey. “Good care cannot wait.”

Earlier this year, Biden pledged to invest $ 400 billion over eight years in home and community-based services for the disabled and the elderly. It is unclear whether there is support for that much money in Congress. A House committee suggested spending $ 190 billion.

Republicans have long disapproved of the cost and scope of Biden’s stimulus package, saying it’s just too expensive. Casey said he didn’t expect much Republican support for his home care legislation. Its bill has no Republican co-sponsors.

Domestic help

Craig Benish uses his elevator to go down the steps in front of his home in Susquehanna Ward, Dauphin County.

Despite the challenges of caring for people with severe disabilities at home, some, like Craig Benish’s family, say this is by far the best option. It can save families tens of thousands of dollars annually compared to a nursing home or other community care facility.

More importantly, they can better care for loved ones at home. Rothrock said these housekeepers kept her brother Craig alive.

“Without this quality of care he would not be here,” said Rothrock.

Rothrock, a member of the Service Employees International Union, sat next to Casey, telling him to do whatever he could to get the full $ 400 billion Biden is looking for for home and community-based care. The SEIU is working to have Congress commit to Biden’s full proposal.

“We know it’s a fight,” she said to Casey. “But you can’t fix bullet holes with a plaster.”

Craig Benish’s family is working to find and keep helpers to keep him going. When he was born, his family were told that he may not survive past his teenage years, although some live with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in their 30s. Craig is 29 years old.

His family holds a large, thick black folder with the tasks that his helpers have to perform every day. Rothrock has largely given up her career goals to take care of her brother. Carolyn Benish works for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. And they regularly train new helpers.

Rothrock estimates that the family has employed almost 200 helpers in the past 20 years. Some volunteers love to work but need to find jobs with better pay or more benefits, she and her mother said. Depending on the level of experience of the helpers, it may take days or weeks for them to take care of Craig.

“We’re all trying to help each other,” said Carolyn Benish. “This is how we get through.”

Domestic help

Craig Benish, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, relies on home nursing 24/7. Benish, 29, lives with his family in Susquehanna Ward.

One of Craig’s assistants, Ieisha Brown, has been working with him and the family for several months. She regularly works long shifts to help with his maintenance. Since she doesn’t have a car, she uses a rideshare service to get home.

But Brown built a relationship with Craig in a relatively short amount of time.

“He’s my buddy,” she said.

As they work to support Craig, family members also try to keep each other’s spirits up. They try to have Craig eat as much as possible in order to keep as much weight off as possible. Carolyn Benish joked that she is like the witch in the story of Hansel and Gretel, trying to get her son to keep eating.

It’s important to laugh wherever possible, she said.

“We’re doing our best and that’s all we can do,” said Carolyn Benish. “And there are people who are worse off than us.”

Black Rock Campsite

Where to stay and eat

Accommodation in and around JTNP comes in three main categories: camping in the park, affordable hotels and motels in adjacent towns, and luxury resorts in the Palm Springs / Palm Desert area, about 40 miles southwest of the park. Many of these options can sell out on busy winter weekends and the holiday season, but planning and flexibility can still give you prime locations and great deals.

camping

There is nothing like desert camping under the incredible starry night sky of JTNP, to be woken up to colorful sunrises, to greet the morning with an outdoor breakfast and to end the day at camp with a spectacular sunset. Because of this, the 500 campsites at JTNP’s nine campsites are often full on weekends and holidays. You can reserve (recovery.gov) six of the campsites (Black Rock, Cottonwood, Indian Cove, Jumbo Rocks, Ryan, and Sheep Pass) six months in advance for $ 20 to $ 25 per night ($ 50 for group spaces). The other three (Belle, Hidden Valley, White Tank) are first come, first served for $ 15 a night – and you have to arrive early to get a seat during peak hours. All nine have space for mobile homes.

The Black Rock (99 spaces) and Cottonwood (62 spaces) campsites are the only ones with running water, flush toilets and RV emptying stations, so they tend to be booked out very quickly. Given that Black Rock is at an altitude of 4,000 feet in the northwest corner of the park, expect cooler temperatures than lower elevations. It has a designated area for motorhomes with horse trailers and you can easily go shopping in the town of Yucca Valley, just 5 miles away.

Camping in the wild is free with registration, but be aware of your water supply and weather conditions before entering the hinterland.

Accommodation and gastronomy nearby

Joshua Tree City (five miles northwest of the west entrance)

Accommodation: Fancy retro camping is coming to the area late this year with the opening of the car camp, where guests can settle in 47 luxurious, custom-made Airstream trailers. However, if you are traveling with your own accommodation (i.e. an RV), the KOA Campground in Desert Hot Springs is a good option 25 miles southwest of Joshua Tree. It has 260 RV sites with hookups, as well as 26 tent sites and five cabins, and an array of family-friendly amenities including laundry, mini golf, pickleball courts, a playground, a pool and café, a social clubhouse, and a shop.

Eat: Start your day in the town of Joshua Tree with a hearty breakfast at JT Country Kitchen, and perhaps order French toast with bananas or biscuits with gravy. For lunch, the Crossroads Cafe serves thick sandwiches, including reubens and eggplant parmesan. Come for dinner at Joshua Tree Saloon, live music accompanied by homemade barbecue at “The Yard”.

Twentynine Palms (five miles north of the north entrance station)

Accommodation: The 83-room Best Western SureStay Plus boasts a prime location just minutes from the park, great deals, free breakfast, and a large, palm-shaded pool with a jacuzzi.

Eat: Stock up on croissants, pastries, and sandwiches at Campbell Hill Bakery before a hike. For dinner, Kitchen in the Desert serves mesquite-grilled Trinidadian chicken in an art gallery setting.

Note: The south entrance has no adjacent food or lodging facilities, but traveling west on I-10 30 miles will take you to Indio, the easternmost portion of Palm Springs’ resort communities.

Palm Springs

Accommodation: In the communities around Palm Springs, look for upscale resorts like the 244-room Ritz Carlton at Rancho Mirage, which pampers guests with cliff views, access to the golf course, kids’ club, pools, and spa. In Palm Springs, the sprawling La Quinta Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, offers an old-school Hollywood vibe (from its origins in 1926) with world-class service and facilities in nearly 800 rooms, suites, and villas in beautiful Spanish buildings Mission style.

Eat: At Miro’s in downtown Palm Springs you can enjoy pan-European cuisine (Budapest schnitzel, shrimp and Provençal scallops) in a Mediterranean ambience or on a romantic terrace. The restaurant also deserves high marks for its extensive wine list. For more casual quick bites, head to John’s, a popular diner north of downtown that serves breakfast, gourmet burgers, fried chicken, and rib specials all day.

Hannity: Biden has to end Rehoboth Beach vacation amid crisis; ‘Get off your A– and get to work’ http://patrian.com.ar/hannity-biden-has-to-end-rehoboth-beach-vacation-amid-crisis-get-off-your-a-and-get-to-work/ http://patrian.com.ar/hannity-biden-has-to-end-rehoboth-beach-vacation-amid-crisis-get-off-your-a-and-get-to-work/#respond Sat, 18 Sep 2021 03:00:07 +0000 http://patrian.com.ar/hannity-biden-has-to-end-rehoboth-beach-vacation-amid-crisis-get-off-your-a-and-get-to-work/

With more than 100 Americans trapped behind the Taliban lines in Afghanistan, more than 10,000 illegal immigrants – many of them pouring from Haiti after the deportation flights stopped – to South Texas and a record inflation selfishly decided to take a weekend beach vacation in his home state Doing Delaware, Sean Hannity said on Friday.

In his “Opening Monologue”, Hannity Biden tore up because he continued to ignore multiplying crises and acted unilaterally – in this case he decided to go to Rehoboth Beach for one of the warm summer weekends in the mid-Atlantic.

The host pointed out that it is now day 34 that Americans are being “held hostage behind enemy lines” in Afghanistan – noting that people he has sworn to protect are now hiding while he moved to Sussex County, Del. flies to enjoy the weekend.

“At this hour, Biden is not working around the clock to obtain her release, he is not in a command center working on a solution. Instead, he’s enjoying another long weekend in Delaware, ”said Hannity.

Corresponding local reports, Biden’s plane landed in a parking lot near Gordon’s Pond on the North Shore at around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

“Someone in administration needs to remind Joe that he’s the President of the United States – he needs to get his ass up and get to work,” said Hannity.

“If he’s too weak and frail and too slow to do the job seven days a week, he should step down and retire because right now there are serious crises on several fronts.”

The host referred to France, where America’s oldest allied nation – tracing back to working with Marquis de Lafayette during the Revolutionary War – took the unprecedented step of recalling US Ambassador Phillippe Etienne after the Macron administration signaled it essentially were taken by surprise by a nuclear submarine deal between the US and Australia – with claims they were already in talks with Canberra to strike out on their own on the matter.

Hannity added that the White House made a “nefarious Friday news dump” when CENTCOM Commander Kenneth “Frank” McKenzie Jr made several children transporting water.

“Do you understand that, Joe? Your over the horizon drone attack killed seven innocent children – Joe Biden has blood on his hands. “

He added that General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, had previously reassured the country that the mission was successful, calling it a “just strike”.

Hannity reiterated that the four-star general may have been guilty of treason if the allegations made by a Chinese backchannel, as recently recorded in a book by two Washington Post reporters, are true.

The need for long-term care among retirees varies greatly, research shows http://patrian.com.ar/the-need-for-long-term-care-among-retirees-varies-greatly-research-shows/ http://patrian.com.ar/the-need-for-long-term-care-among-retirees-varies-greatly-research-shows/#respond Fri, 17 Sep 2021 19:00:35 +0000 http://patrian.com.ar/the-need-for-long-term-care-among-retirees-varies-greatly-research-shows/

One of the biggest unknowns to retirees may be whether, and to what extent, they will eventually need long-term care – that is, help with the activities of daily living.

Many people may need little care, if any. according to new research from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. About 20% of 65 year olds will not need long-term care for the rest of their lives, and one in five will need minimal assistance.

At the same time, however, around 25% will need significant assistance for more than three years. Another 38% will fall in the middle and require moderate care for one to three years, the study shows.

A strong indicator of how much support a person will need? Whether they are healthy in their late 60s, according to the study.

In addition, getting married results in a lower likelihood of needing long-term care, research shows. Among women, 19% of married people don’t need any at all, compared with 14% of single people. Of men, 17% do not need assistance when they are married, compared to 13% who are unmarried.

The uncertainty of the need for care is a challenge when it comes to old-age provision, say experts. In other words, determining how to prepare for unknown costs can be difficult.

“There are no good answers, only bad ones,” says certified financial planner David Mendels, Director of Planning at Creative Financial Concepts in New York. “So you choose your best lousy answer.”

Medicare – which most retirees rely on – generally does not cover long-term care. (Qualified nursing and rehabilitation services are only covered to a limited extent in relation to certain hospital stays.)

The monthly cost of such assistance can be staggering: a median of $ 4,300 for care in an assisted living facility ($ 51,600 annually), $ 7,756 for a semi-private room in a nursing home ($ 93,072) $ 4,576 for housekeeping ($ 54,912 annually), and $ 4,481 for housewife services ($ 53,772 annually), after Genworth.

“It’s horrendously expensive when you end up in that group that needs significant maintenance,” Mendels said. “But you really have no idea if you are going to need this unless you already know you have serious health problems.”

So what are your options? There are a few.

Some retirees choose to “self-insure” – that is, they rely on their own assets – to cover the unpredictable costs. That could mean eventually spending your retirement savings, taking out a reverse mortgage, or selling a vacation home, for example. Other options include leaning on family members or spending (or shielding) assets to qualify for Medicaid-sponsored nursing home care.

The simplest solution – long-term care insurance – has become too expensive for many consumers and, according to the Secure Retirement Institute, contributed to a 60% drop in sales from 2012 to 2018. Since the damage exceeded expectations, many insurers have fled the area.

The average annual premium cost for initial benefits of $ 165,000 for a 60-year-old couple ranges from $ 2,600 to $ 8,750, depending on whether or how much the benefits increase annually, according to the company the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance.

However, there is a 50 percent chance of never having to use the insurance, according to the association.

Some advisors recommend that their clients consider a hybrid policy that combines life insurance with long-term long-term care insurance. This can be done through a new purchase or by converting an existing policy – term or whole – into an option.

Although the details of each policy vary, the idea is that you can have the death benefit while you are alive if you need it for support – although it does reduce the amount your heirs would inherit. Some hybrid options offer long-term care insurance in addition to the death benefit.

As a rule, however, you must be insurable, i.e. have health insurance, just like with pure long-term care insurance.

You also usually need a pot of money to finance it. Some insurers require a flat rate upfront fee, while others allow you to spread the premium payments over a number of years.

Treasury lifts restrictions on investment properties http://patrian.com.ar/treasury-lifts-restrictions-on-investment-properties/ http://patrian.com.ar/treasury-lifts-restrictions-on-investment-properties/#respond Tue, 14 Sep 2021 21:45:42 +0000 http://patrian.com.ar/treasury-lifts-restrictions-on-investment-properties/

the financial department and FHFA announced Tuesday that it is suspending certain requirements made in January of the Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements (PSPAs) between Treasury and. were added Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

In accordance with these requirements, Fannie Mae had limited the acquisition of loans backed by second homes and investment properties to 7% of its total single family purchases and had stricter underwriting rules for those loans.

The Treasury Department’s statement of suspension should clarify the reasons for the change.

“The suspension of these PSPA requirements recognizes that the FHFA has the authority and responsibility for the safety and soundness of businesses and promotes real estate finance markets that support sustainable home ownership, and is not intended to meet all housing demand given current housing market conditions the Treasury Department said in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.

“Home prices have accelerated rapidly, with the annual growth rate of national home prices at a high of several decades,” said the Treasury Department press release. “A major challenge facing the US housing market today is insufficient housing supply. The administration focuses on promoting housing stability, including the further development of housing policy, which can sustainably increase the stock of affordable rental apartments and condominiums. ”

Lenders and trade group officials strongly objected to the changes made a week before the Trump administration left. Objections noted that the PSPA limit of 7% caused disruption, especially as an important provision required a 52-week review.

They also complained that the cash window restrictions would force lenders to send mortgage-backed securities to the private market, making Wall Street coffers fat.

Ina March letter to the Treasury, the Association of Mortgage Lenders stated: “It is not clear that private market participants currently have the capacity or resources to fill the entire gap between company boundaries and the volume needed to meet underlying demand.

“Based on reports MBA has received from a wide cross-section of lenders, it does not appear that companies have developed clear details or timelines for their plans to ensure compliance with these limits. For example, lenders have reported different requirements communicated to them by enterprise staff regarding their per-lender limits, the dates by which they must meet the requirements and the timeframe over which they will be measured, ”says in the writing.

In the spring, the demand for investment properties and holiday apartments had risen by 84% compared to the previous year – more than double the demand for a primary residence, according to a report from Red fins.

The industry’s early response to the suspension has been very positive.

the Community Home Lenders Association issued a statement of support: “CHLA hails FHFA Director Sandra Thompson for lifting PSPA restrictions in January on higher-risk loans, investors and second homes, and access to the cash window for small lenders.”
